Imagine if you could speak music and
bring your unique artistry to life quickly and effortlessly?
I’ve been a creator all my life. In the beginning, I created music largely from making mistakes while I was practicing off the page, creating a new sound that I didn’t understand but wanted to explore. I knew what the circle of fifths sounds like, but I was so annoyed when I could hear what I wanted to play next and didn’t actually know what that was, or how to make it happen.
I had so much creativity in me, but no way of realizing it into the world except for by accident. I was usually pretty shy and doubtful about this ability and potential of mine, since the music I heard coming from the halls of the Royal Conservatory, was always so stellar and perfect. I was discouraged and extremely frustrated by my inability to comprehend and use this language I was reading: the language of music.
Being a kid in the 90’s, I had two cousins who were deeply into house music. We grew up together, and I fell in love with the electronic music scene through live-to-air radio broadcasts (because obviously I wasn’t allowed to go clubbing – being 12).
I’d fall asleep listening to the layers in the music, analyzing their movements and textures, intros and exits. Mixed tape after mixed tape (and boy did I get good at making mix tapes) I lost myself in the groove, only to find myself feeling whole while dancing in my room. I began playing keys over beats and I could free my mind and feel my soul by playing along. I found my classical piano training mixed perfectly with the transcendent vibes of the underground.
I was in love with the high, but again on the downlow.
I began to experiment with recording with my SM58, an ’89 PC and a voice memo app. I layered pianos over top of each other. I added voice. The quality was horrible, but I was just happy it worked! I began to compose for myself, for school projects, as limited as I was, I knew there was something there for me.
I needed a system with which to understand and express my unique artistic voice,
in real time.
Enter my favourite teacher of all time who introduced the concept of
SPEAKING MUSIC.
Up until then I had been reading music for 14 years already. When I began this class - it was a university course called Piano Improvisation - I thought: how do you teach improv, right? This guy opened a world of possibility.
I was taught not only about keyboard theory, but how it actually relates to the music making in real time! Tools and tricks to make creation fun and easy and beautiful and exciting!
All of the sudden all the bits and pieces I was told to blindly memorize, actually had reason and purpose and connection, and I could see it all there on the keys right before my eyes.
I could finally start EXPRESSING MYSELF at the keys, using my artistic voice! Fantastic, now what.
I started teaching.
Fast forward 20 years and I have helped 1000’s of students, young and old express themselves through the keys be it by playing, composing, performing, improvising, reading, lifting, or faking.
I branched off from my first teaching job to work for myself and founded B# Studios, which is essentially lessons in speaking music, creating at the keys, and having fun with expression while reaching your specific goals.
I have begun to publish my methods in a seven-book series, creatively titled:
The B Sharp Manual.
So far, I’ve published book 1 and the others are in production.
Through a series of serendipitous events, and 3 months spent in the British Columbian mountains (of Canada), I found my tribe – the music makers and the classical musicians of the Electronic Music Festival World.
I began to work with producers,
many of whom didn’t have the musical background I had.
I found myself helping with musicianship, collaborating on songs, teaching theory, and providing compositional and improvisational tools to better their productions.
I started performing in this scene and my popularity began to grow. I am now creating an album and a new genre that I’m calling the “classical whomp,” which combines classical piano and electronic beats.
(I know I promised you beautiful Borealites a winter concert…
But it’s looking like early spring. Stay tuned for announcements on that to come!)
Through many years of confusion and doubt, accompanied by a burning passion and deep love of music, I shifted from being an ill-equipped musician who could only create by accident or by using other people’s materials, to a competent and well-respected artist in my community.
I found my worth affirmed through providing my unique voice to my audiences, with a command over my craft. I am able to find inspiration everywhere I look and offer it to those who resonate, and I want to offer YOU the same tools.
There are chording apps and sample packs available of course, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed and lost in too much choice, or confused with why an augmented chord isn’t working as your tonic for example… but,
· Imagine if you knew how to build chords and use them independently of knowing keys?
· Imagine understanding how chords work within a key?
· Imagine understanding the whole world of modes and how they relate to each other?
· Imagine having simple, actionable composition & improv tools/tricks under your fingertips?
That’s just what you’ll learn in my new online course called: B#@Composition.
I am offering a 3-month crash course in keyboard theory, delivered in an immediately comprehensive & usable way… the B Sharp Way!
My intention is to aid with those who want to compose music
unique to their own artistry.
By the end of the course, participants will have a full understanding of how to build any chord, how to place it within a scale, how to find the key of a song, how to write a melody and how to harmonize it… among other things.
If this resonates with you,
